Harbor Designs worked with PLUS to design the PLUS Body Wash Refillable Dispenser that is made from 50% post-consumer recycled plastic. The Refillable Dispenser holds 1 roll of PLUS Body Wash (the equivalent of 30+ foamy washes) directly in your shower for everyday cleansing. Just add water.

UNDERSTANDING THE PRODUCT THROUGH PROTOTYPING

As a significant part of the process, the Harbor design team had to consider many methods of dispensing and mechanical prototypes to understand the best ways to simplify the dispensing experience. Initially the design consideration was to use flat square soap sheets from PLUS travel line, but through natural R&D process of understanding the soap properties and dispensing functionality needs we moved towards a roll design.

Harbor collaborated with the PLUS team from start to finish. working closely with manufacturing challenges and advised design-related issues throughout the development process.

Playful Inspiration Leads To Better Consideration

The Harbor team had many struggles with initial concepts like sticking soap sheets and making mechanism’s small enough to have a small form factor. Eventually the team was inspired by other dispensing products on the market which lead the team down the path of using a soap roll. This helped a ton with designing more efficient, functional mechanisms and allowed for a smaller more playful form factor.

Understanding Function and DFM

Being both an Industrial Designer and Design Engineer allowed me to quickly iterate many ideas both through sketching, rendering, and prototyping. Graphics like below allowed me to showcase full mechanism concepts, design language, and functionality without having to prototype. This was the idea that moved forward into production.
